More marks for biology in WBJEE Medical next year 2016 onward
West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Paper Pattern
West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) coming-up with new pattern in WBJEE (Medical) Biology question paper.
From year 2016, candidates appearing for WBJEE medical entrance examinations will have to take a 150 marks paper on biological sciences. Physics and Chemistry carry 50 marks each, have been combined one paper. Each subject will carry 50 marks. The mathematics paper will remain of 100 marks.

WBJEE 2016 Question Pattern:
Questions will be based on the syllabus for WBJEE-2016 as given in
In every subject, all questions will be of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) type, with four options against each of the questions.
Questions will be of 3 (three) categories as per following table:
Subject | Q Category 1 | Q Category 2 | Q Category 3 | Total No of Questions | Total Marks |
Biological Sciences | 80 X 1 mark | 25×2 marks | 10×2 marks | 115 | 150 |
Physics | 30 X 1 mark | 5×2 marks | 5×2 marks | 40 | 50 |
+ | + | + | + | + | + |
Chemistry | 30 X 1 mark | 5×2 marks | 5×2 marks | 40 | 50=100 |
Mathematics | 50X1 mark | 15×2 marks | 10×2 marks | 75 | 100 |
Mode of Answering:
Questions are to be answered on specially designed machine readable answer sheets (OMR Answer Sheet). ANSWERS ARE TO BE MARKED (BUBBLED) USING ONLY BLUE/BLACK BALL POINT PEN ON THE OMR ANSWER SHEET.
It is to be noted carefully that besides answering the questions, candidates has to fill in as well as bubble in all other relevant information including the “Question Booklet No” etc. at the indicated places on both OMR Answer Sheet and Attendance Sheet during examination.
WBJEE 2016 Scoring Pattern:
- Question Category 1:
- Only one option is
- Correct option will yield 1 (one) mark
- Incorrect option will yield -¼ (negative ¼)
- For any combination of more than one option, the said answer will be treated as incorrect and will yield -¼ (negative ¼)
- Question Category 2:
- Only one option is
- Correct option will yield 2 (two)
- Incorrect option will yield -½ (negative ½)
- For any combination of more than one option, the said answer will be treated as incorrect and will yield -½ (negative ½)
- Question Category 3:
- One or more options are
- Marking all correct options only will yield 2 (two)
- For any combination of answers containing one or more incorrect options, the said answer will be treated as incorrect and it will yield zero (0) mark.
- For partially correct answers, e. when all correct options are not marked and also no incorrect options is marked, marks awarded = 2 X (no of correct options marked) / (total no of actually correct options)
WBJEEM 2016 Ranking and tie breaking:
In WBJEEM-2016, there will be 3 (three) separate merit lists: (i) Engineering, (ii) Medical and (iii) Pharmacy (for Pharmacy colleges other than in Jadavpur University).
(i) Engineering: Merit list for successful candidates in the Engineering category will be prepared by listing them in the descending order of the total marks scored by However, there may be ties and such ties will be broken by sequentially applying the following set of rules:
- Less negative marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry taken together
- More positive marks in Mathematics and Physics taken together
- More positive marks in Mathematics and Chemistry taken together
- Less negative marks in Mathematics and Physics taken together
- Less negative marks in Mathematics and Chemistry taken together
- More positive marks in Mathematics for only the 2 marks questions
- More positive marks in Physics for only the 2 marks questions
- More positive marks in Chemistry for only the 2 marks questions
- Less negative marks in Mathematics for only the 2 marks questions
- Less negative marks in Physics for only the 2 marks questions
(ii) Medical: Merit list for successful candidates in the Medical category will be prepared by listing them in the descending order of the total marks scored by However, there may be ties and such ties will be broken by sequentially applying the following set of rules:
- Less negative marks in Biology, Physics and Chemistry taken together
- More positive marks in Biology and Chemistry taken together
- More positive marks in Biology and Physics taken together
- Less negative marks in Biology and Chemistry taken together
- Less negative marks in Biology and Physics taken together
- More positive marks in Biology for only the 2 marks questions
- More positive marks in Chemistry for only the 2 marks questions
- More positive marks in Physics for only the 2 marks questions
- Less negative marks in Biology for only the 2 marks questions
- Less negative marks in Chemistry for only the 2 marks questions
- Less negative marks in Physics for only the 2 marks questions
(iii) Pharmacy other than in Jadavpur University: Merit list for successful candidates For Pharmacy other than in Jadavpur University will be prepared by listing them in the descending order of the total marks scored by them in Physics & Chemistry from all types (‘E’, ‘M’, ‘C’). However, there may be ties and such ties will be broken by sequentially applying the following set of rules:
- Less negative marks in Physics & Chemistry
- More positive marks in Chemistry
- Less negative marks in Chemistry
- More positive marks in Chemistry for only the 2 marks questions
- Less negative marks in Chemistry for only the 2 marks questions
- More positive marks in Physics for only the 2 marks questions
- Less negative marks in Physics for only the 2 marks questions
(iv) Pharmacy in Jadavpur University: For Pharmacy course in Jadavpur University, the merit list of engineering will be
- Final tie breaker: If there are still ties even after applying above rules, same will be broken by the date of birth (DOB) of the candidates; the older candidate will be given preference over the younger
Experts in the WBJEEB committee have suggested that medical studies require additional knowledge of biology and hence more emphasis should be given on biology. Moreover, the subject itself consists of several sections like zoology, botany and physiology. Hence biology needs to be evaluated on a larger scale.
“Keeping this in mind, we have decided to devote 150 marks to biology ,” said by Bhaskar Gupta, chairman of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board.
Each paper will be of multiple choice question type. There will be three categories. In the first category, Each question has one correct answer and carry 1 mark for each wrong answer attempted deduces 1/4 marks. Only one option is correct. A correct answer will yield one mark. For incorrect response, 25% of the full marks would be deducted. More than one answer in the OMR sheet will be treated as an incorrect answer.
In the second category, a correct answer will carry two marks. For incorrect response, 25% of full marks i.e 1/2 marks would be deducted.
In the third category, more than one option may be correct and marking all of them will yield two marks. For any combination of answers containing one or more incorrect answers, net marks awarded will be zero. And for partially correct response without any incorrect marking marks awarded will be twice the number of correct responses (or total correct options).
Questions will be based on the same syllabus already published Click Here WBJEEB Syllabus.
In every subject, all questions will be Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) type with 4 options against each of the questions. In mathematics, there will be 60 questions containing one marks and 20 questions containing 2 marks each. Ten of these 2 marks questions will have more than one correct answer.
In biological sciences, there will be 90 questions carrying one mark each and 30 questions with two marks each. Fifteen of the 2 marks questions will have more than one correct answer.
In physics and chemistry together, there will be 60 one-mark questions and 20 two-mark questions. Ten questions will have more than one correct answer.
“Those who are taking combined papers for engineering and medical would have required to give four individual papers in case we didn’t reduce the physics and chemistry weightage. It would have been very taxing on them. Hence we decided to reduce the weightage of physics and chemistry. We have also decided to reduce negative marking for each wrong answer from 1/3 to 1/4 now,” said by Bhaskar Gupta, chairman of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board.
