Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS): The course duration is 5½ years (4½ years of classroom study followed by a year of rotating internship or clerkship). The 4½ years of classroom study is broken into 3 phases of 18 months each. Each phase of 18 months is known as Professional and is further divided into 3 semesters of 6 months each. There is a semester exam at the end of each semester and a Professional exam at the end of each professional. The third professional is devoted to monthly clinical work In the wards and departments of the hospital. In all,  there are 3 professional examinations, followed by practical and clinical examinations. The pass percentage required is 50 percent.

Although MBBS is not the only degree to becoming a doctor in India, as there are other alternative medical branches of medicine like Ayurveda and Homeopathy, it is still the most coveted of all the medical degrees in India. For pursuing an MBBS degree in India one needs to complete 12 years of study and admission to most medical colleges in India is done on the basis of the medical entrance test of various medical colleges. The National Testing Agency (NTA)  also conducts a National Eligibility cum Entrance NEET for admission to all Government and Private medical colleges in India.

Total seats for medical and dental courses in all medical and dental colleges run by the Union of India. For pursuing an M.B.B.S course in India, one needs to pass the higher secondary examination or its equivalent in the science stream with biology as a subject.

Eligibility Criteria for MBBS Admission in India

Eligibility criteria for medical admission (M.B.B.S) in India are strictly based on the Rules and Regulations of the National Medical Commission of India (NMC).

The candidate willing to take admission in the M.B.B.S course in India must have passed the Class 12th examination with Subjects Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) 50 percent for the general category and 40% for Backward Category.

Age Criteria: The candidates should have completed 17 years of age on or before the 31st day of December of the year of admission.
